Step 1
Purchase a network cable of the correct length. LAN connectors must be located at both ends. Crossover cables are recommended for direct connection of two computers. Most modern network cards are capable of detecting the position of the cores and automatically adjusting to perform the desired functions.
Step 2
Turn on both mobile computers and connect the selected cable to their network adapters. Wait a while for the system to automatically detect the new network. For Windows Vista and Seven, select the "Home Network" type after the appropriate window appears. This will allow you to quickly configure your network settings.
Step 3
Your local network of two laptops is ready to go. If one of the mobile computers is connected to the Internet, for example via a USB modem, then you can provide access to the network for the second device. To do this, enable the use of a static IP address for the network adapter of the laptop that is already connected to the Internet.
Step 4
In the settings of the second device, specify the selected IP address by entering it in the Preferred DNS Server and Default Gateway fields. Naturally, in this case it is also necessary to use a static (permanent) IP.
Step 5
If you have connected computers into a local network for quick exchange of information between them, then set certain permissions for public folders. This will allow you to quickly access the files you need without worrying about the security of operating systems. Please be aware that the standard Windows firewall and other traffic-analyzing programs may prevent you from gaining access to your computer.
