The automatic implementation of arithmetic operations in Excel is undoubtedly a convenient feature that makes it much easier to work with large amounts of data. However, as a result, for example, division, numbers with a large number of decimal places can be obtained. In this situation, rounding must be done.
The rounding operation of numbers in Excel is quite simple, so it will not cause any particular difficulties even for a beginner. At the same time, like most other operations, it can be applied to a single number or to an entire array of the desired numbers.
Selecting an array for rounding
In order to make the program understand to which parts of the database the rounding operation should be extended, it is necessary to select the part of the array to be implemented. This can be done by left-clicking on the desired cell and stretching the selection field to the required number of cells. However, in the process of work, it may turn out that the array to be rounded is discrete, that is, discontinuous. One of the most obvious, but also the most time-consuming options in this case will be sequential rounding of data in each part of the array. You can do it even easier: while making a selection, press on the keyboard and hold down the Ctrl key. This will allow you to select with the mouse discontinuous data arrays, with respect to which you can subsequently perform a general operation. Finally, the third way is to specify an array of data to be rounded using a formula.
Rounding off fractions
In order to round off the selected numbers, click on one of the cells in the selected area with the left mouse button. This action will cause the appearance of a menu, one of the items of which will be "Format cells" - and you should select it. In this menu, in turn, you will see several tabs: the parameters you need are located on the "Numbers" tab. The specified section allows you to select the type of numbers that are located in the selected cells. In order to carry out the rounding operation, it is necessary to select the format designated as "Numeric" from the offered list. Selecting this format will bring up a menu with additional settings. One of the items on this menu will be the number of decimal places, which you can choose at your discretion. In this case, the number itself, written in each of the rounded cells, will not change as a result of this operation, since only the format of its image will change. Thus, you can always revert to the original format in the same way or choose a different rounding type.
Rounding whole numbers
To round off integers, use the ROUND function. In parentheses after the function designation, add the first argument - the name of the cell or specify the data array to which the operation should be applied, and the second argument - the number of significant digits to be used for rounding. However, the same method can be used to round off fractions. So, a digit equal to 0 will cause the number to be rounded to an integer value. Digit equal to 1 - rounding to 1 decimal place. A digit equal to -1 is rounded to the first ten. Suppose we want to round the number 1003 in cell A2 to thousands. In this case, the function will look like this: = ROUND (A2, -3). As a result, the number 1000 will be displayed in the specified cell.
