Restoring a forgotten user password can be conditionally divided into two stages: resetting the administrator password and assigning a new user password.
Instructions
Step 1
Restart your computer and simultaneously press the Ctrl + Alt + Del function keys twice (for Home Edition and Professional Edition).
Step 2
Enter the value "Administrator" in the "Username" field and do not enter any value in the "Password" field.
Step 3
Confirm the execution of the command by clicking the OK button and open the main menu of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system by clicking the Start button.
Step 4
Go to Run and enter control userpasswords2 in the Open field.
Step 5
Confirm the execution of the command by clicking OK and go to the "Users" tab of the dialog box that opens.
Step 6
Specify the account to be changed in the user list and select the Change Password option.
Step 7
Enter the desired value of the new password in the "New password" field and confirm it by re-entering the same value in the "Confirm" field.
Step 8
Click OK to confirm your choice and restart your computer to apply the selected changes (for Home Edition and Professional Edition).
Step 9
Restart your computer and press the F8 function key (for Home Edition and Professional Editions in a workgroup).
Step 10
Continue to hold down the key until the "Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu" dialog box appears and select "Safe Mode".
Step 11
Confirm the execution of the command by pressing the function key Enter and specify the required version of the operating system.
Step 12
Confirm your selection by pressing the Enter key and select the "Administrator" user in the "To get started, click username" dialog box.
Step 13
Confirm your choice by pressing the Enter key and once again confirm the execution of the command by pressing the "Yes" button in the system query window that opens.
