The Standard Registry Editor is included by Microsoft in the base software for all versions of Windows. However, this program is not often used, so the manufacturer did not put a link to its launch in a prominent place in the graphical interface. And due to the fact that editing the registry is a potentially dangerous operation for the operation of the OS, there is no link to it even in the utility section of the Windows main menu.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the context menu by right-clicking on the My Computer shortcut on the desktop. To start the registry editor, you need to select the item that is called "Registry Editor" in it.
Step 2
Press the WIN key or click the Start button on the taskbar if the My Computer shortcut is not on the desktop. If the display of this component is disabled in the system settings, then you can find it in the main menu - by right-clicking on the "Computer" item, you will open the same menu with the desired item "Registry Editor".
Step 3
Use the standard program launch dialog if for some reason the context menu of the “My Computer” component is not available. To open it, press the WIN + R combination of "hot keys" or select "Run" in the main menu on the "Start" button. Type regedit in the input field and press Enter or click the OK button. Executing this command by the system will open the Registry Editor window.
Step 4
Run the program by double clicking the mouse if other methods are not available. You can find it on your computer through the built-in Windows search engine. To do this, open the main menu on the "Start" button. In Windows XP, go to the "Find" section, select the "Files and folders" item and in the file name input field type regedit.exe and click the "Find" button. In Windows 7, just type regedit.exe in the search box. After the end of the search procedure, there will be one or more links in the list of results. You need to select the one in which the file name exactly matches regedit.exe without any additions, and the location address indicates the directory where the currently active operating system is located.
Step 5
Use Windows Explorer to independently search for the executable file of the registry editor, if you do not want to wait until the search engine reaches the desired folder. You can start Explorer by double-clicking on the shortcut "My Computer" or by pressing the keyboard shortcut WIN + E (Russian Y). In Explorer, you need to go to the system drive, and then to the folder where the current operating system is installed - most often this is the C drive and the Windows folder. In this folder, find the executable file of the registry editor (regedit.exe) and run it.
