By default, Windows operating system settings do not allow the user to see file extensions. It is not always convenient in work, and sometimes you just need to see the type of a particular file on your hard disk or removable media. How to change the settings to activate the option to display file extensions is described below.
Necessary
Windows OS
Instructions
Step 1
The file extension is the part of the file name by which the operating system or application programs identify the file type. It is necessary for the OS components to know which application should send the file for processing, and applications to determine in which format the contents of the file should be read. The software has no problems reading file extensions, but there are situations when the user also needs to see the full file name. For example, the text files Document1.rtf and Document1.doc will be displayed with the same icon and the same name without the extension. You can only find out which of them who is by opening both files, which is inconvenient. To activate the settings for displaying file extensions, start Windows Explorer by double-clicking on the "My Computer" shortcut. The same can be done by pressing the keyboard shortcut WIN + E (Latin R). Next, in the "Tools" section of the Explorer menu, select "Folder Options". As a result, a window will open in which go to the "View" tab and at the bottom of the long list "Additional parameters" uncheck the item "Hide extensions for registered file types". If the file, the extension of which you need to see, is a system file, then in the same list uncheck the item "Hide protected system files" and put a full stop opposite the item "Show hidden files and folders". To commit these changes to the settings, click the "OK" button.
Step 2
There is an alternative way to the same settings - through the "Control Panel" Windows. You can start it by selecting the "Control Panel" item in the "Settings" section of the main menu ("Start" button). In the control panel, start "Folder Options" and as a result you will be taken to the same window for setting folder properties. Further actions are the same as in the previous version.
