The task of clearing the system memory of a computer running Windows can be solved by the user using the standard tools of the operating system itself without the involvement of additional software.
Instructions
Step 1
Clean up the system disk from temporary files. To do this, call the main menu by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "All Programs" item. Expand the Accessories link and launch the Windows Explorer application. Go to the path drive_name: / Documents and Settings / user_name / LocalSettings / Temp - for Windows XP or drive_name: / Users / username / AppData / Local / Temp - for Windows 7
and delete all contents of the Temp folder.
Step 2
Shrink Windows system files. To do this, find a file called pagefile.sys in the root partition of the system volume, which is a paging file, and either shrink it or move it to another volume. Also delete the file named hiberfil.sys, which is designed to preserve the state of the computer's memory when entering hibernation or sleep mode.
Step 3
Press simultaneously the functional keys Ctrl, alt="Image" and Del in order to launch the task manager utility and go to the "Processes" tab of the program dialog box that opens. Identify the modules of programs using a large amount of memory and click the "End Process" button.
Step 4
Return to the main menu "Start" and go to the "Run" dialog in order to remove unnecessary applications that use a large amount of memory from the startup directory. Type msconfig in the "Open" line and confirm the selected action by clicking the OK button. Specify the "Startup" item in the menu that opens and uncheck the boxes of unnecessary applications. Confirm saving of the changes made by clicking OK.
Step 5
Use the standard system disk cleaning function. To do this, open the properties dialog of the required volume and specify the Disk Cleanup command. Confirm the execution of the selected action by clicking the OK button.
