To understand the processes that occur in the system and are associated with its performance, you need to know about the meaning of two concepts - virtual memory and paging file. A paging file is a file in disk space (as opposed to RAM - a separate device) that the system uses to store data that does not fit in RAM. Virtual memory is random access memory along with the paging file. Checking it involves a number of simple steps.

Step 1
Diagnose the state of virtual memory. Usually, the system independently sets the optimal volumes of virtual memory, and it is enough to solve most tasks, but in the case of running applications that require large amounts of RAM, the amount of virtual memory can and should be increased. If the need arises, the system will display a warning about insufficient virtual memory.
Step 2
Call the context menu by clicking on the "My Computer" icon, in which select the "Properties" item. In it, go to the "Advanced" tab, where in the "Performance" section, click on the "Options" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Advanced" tab, and in the "Virtual memory" section, select "Change".
Step 3
Click the Custom Size option in the Paging File Size list in the window that opens. In the "Initial" and "Minimum" text boxes, select the fork of the paging file sizes from its minimum to its maximum. The minimum size should not be less than 1.5 times the size of the RAM. The new virtual memory size will be installed.
Step 4
In addition, a complete cleanup of virtual memory may be required - this procedure is useful if the user is working with valuable and confidential data, since their remnants are often stored in virtual memory.
Step 5
Type the name "secpol.msc" in the Start menu search bar. This action will launch the Local Security Policy utility.
Step 6
Go to the Security Settings submenu of the Local Policies menu of the Security Settings section. In the right part of the window, in the list of parameters, find the line "Shutdown: clearing the paging file", and click on it. In the window that opens, set the switch on the "Local security setting" tab to the "Enabled" position. Now, every time you shutdown, the contents of virtual memory will be destroyed.
