Each discrete graphics card has its own processor and memory frequency. In many respects, the performance of the board depends on these frequencies. But sometimes they need to be reduced, for example, if the video card will not work in 3D for a certain period. Also, at lower frequencies, the board will consume less power, its temperature will decrease, and accordingly, the rotational speed of the cooler will be lower and it will work quieter.

Necessary

  • - CATALYST Control Center 12.1 for owners of ATI Radeon video cards;
  • - RivaTuner program for owners of nVidia video cards.

Instructions

Step 1

For owners of ATI Radeon video cards, you can reduce the frequency using the proprietary CATALYST Control Center video card settings tool. The CATALYST Control Center tool is included with the graphics card drivers. Usually, during the driver installation process, this program is installed. If the application is not yet installed on your computer, you need to install it. If you do not have a driver disc, this software can be easily found on the Internet.

Step 2

Next, we will consider the process of reducing the frequency using the example of CATALYST Control Center 12.1. Although in earlier versions of the software, the downclocking procedure is almost the same, the names of some terms may differ slightly.

Step 3

Right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select AMD VISION Engine Control Center from the menu that appears. Next, click on the "Performance" tab, then on AMD Overdrive. In the window that opens, you will see two sliders with which you can adjust the frequencies of the video card.

Step 4

The topmost slider is the processor frequency. By moving it to the left, you reduce this indicator. The second section is the frequency of the video card's memory, which is reduced by moving the slider to the left. Select the frequencies you need, then click "Apply".

Step 5

Owners of nVidia graphics cards can use the RivaTuner program. Install the program. Start it up. The application window will display the name of your video card. There is an arrow next to it. Click on it. Next, click on the first icon on the left. This will open a window with two sliders. The upper slider controls the processor frequency, the lower one - the memory frequency. By moving the sliders to the left, you lower the frequencies of the video card. After selecting the desired frequency, click "Apply".
