A celebration filmed on videotape - a home holiday, a wedding or a school graduation - is best learned to digitize on a computer. This must be done, because videotapes are short-lived and tend to "crumble", deteriorating from time to time. Files are stored digitally for a very long time, you can burn them to a DVD or keep them on your computer for as long as you need.

Necessary

  • computer
  • Adobe Premier Pro
  • video camera
  • video cassette
  • iLink cord

Instructions

Step 1

Connect your camcorder to your computer. This can be done using an iLink 1394 cable. Your camcorder must have a dedicated DV output. Connect the cord to the camcorder, then to the computer. Make sure that your camcorder is turned off at this moment, as is the computer.

Step 2

Handle the ports for capturing video carefully, otherwise they can fail quickly enough, and repairs will cost about half the cost of the video camera itself. After connecting, turn on the camera. The computer will detect it as new hardware.

Step 3

Install any video editor on your computer. We recommend you the professional Adobe Premier Pro editor, it is simple enough to learn, but at the same time, it will allow you to quickly and efficiently make video editing. You can also use Sony Vegas, Avid, Final cut. After installation, restart your computer. Open the program ("START", select "Adobe Premier Pro" from the list of recently installed programs). When the program interface opens, click "File", "Cupture" - command "capture video". The "Cupture" window will open in front of you. Using the buttons on the control panel, you can record video. Everything works according to the principle of a conventional tape recorder - play, stop, several rewind buttons, a record button. Press Rec (red round button) where you want to record from.

Step 4

Follow the progress of the recording, because it will happen in real time. This has a drawback - it will take you exactly as long as the video itself lasts, but, on the other hand, in parallel, you can evaluate the quality of the recording on the monitor. If you need to split the recording into scenes, you can do so by stopping the recording at the desired location and saving to your computer. Also, the program can do it automatically - for this, in the "Cupture" window, find a special column - "Scene Detect" (to make this function active - check the box opposite). Then the program will divide the video into fragments, in accordance with how you pressed the REC button on the camera at the time of shooting.
