The performance of your scanner depends in part on the type of interface used to connect to your computer. Different models of scanners connect to your computer in different ways. Some scanners use a special adapter that plugs into the computer's motherboard. Others connect using a parallel port, either a SCSI interface, or a USB port.
Instructions
Step 1
LPT (parallel port) connection is the simplest method and does not require additional equipment. But at the same time, this connection is not designed for high data transfer rates, and therefore this method is typical for inexpensive scanners.
Step 2
SCSI scanners use more advanced SCSI adapters that you can connect to both PC and Macintosh. This connection provides a higher data transfer rate compared to LPT models. In the event that the computer does not have a SCSI controller, then the manufacturers include in the kit special cards designed for connecting to the ISA connector. Please be aware that some computers may not have an ISA connector, so make sure your computer supports this connection before purchasing.
Step 3
Most modern scanners use a faster USB interface that allows you to plug in any device without shutting down your computer. This interface may not be available on older computers.
