In Microsoft Office Excel, you can assign your own name to an individual cell or to an entire area of a table. Most often, this opportunity is used for the convenience of accessing named data from formulas, so as not to specify addresses every time. Assigning and changing the names assigned to areas in the spreadsheet is easy and can be done in several ways.

Necessary

Tabular editor Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or 2010

Instructions

Step 1

Select the named area you want to rename. If it's a column, click on its header. Above the table, above the column headings, is the formula bar. The address of the current cell is displayed in the leftmost margin of this line. After selecting a named range or a separate cell, the address in it should be replaced by the name assigned to the range. If after the selection of the column this did not happen, then the name was assigned not to the entire column, but to a certain group of cells in it. Gradually highlighting the cells of the column from top to bottom, wait for the name to appear in this field and proceed to the next step.

Step 2

Select the column name in the left margin of the formula bar and type a new one. In this case, use letters of the Russian or Latin alphabet, numbers and an underscore, the total number of which should not exceed 255 characters. When you finish typing, press Enter and the new name of the selection will be pinned.

Step 3

The second step can be replaced by using a dialog with more detailed cell naming settings. To call it, go to the "Formulas" tab and in the "Defined Names" group of commands, open the "Assign name" drop-down list. The desired item on this list is named exactly the same - "Assign a name".

Step 4

In the "Name" field of the "Create Name" dialog, enter a new name for the column. In the "Region" drop-down list, select an individual sheet or an entire workbook whose formulas should be able to use this name. In the "Note" field, you can type explanatory text. There is no need to change the value in the "Range" field, because Excel has already put the highlighted range address in it. Click OK and the column name will be changed.

Step 5

Often, changing the name of columns means a completely different operation - changing the addressing method. By default, columns in Excel tables are denoted by Latin letters, which are used as column addresses. Letter designations can be replaced with numbers. If you need to perform exactly this or the opposite operation, do it through the Excel settings. In 2010, open the menu using the File button and select Options. In the 2007 version, this button is called Office, and to access the settings, click on the "Excel Settings" button in the menu.

Step 6

Go to the "Formulas" section of the editor settings window and in the "Working with formulas" section check or uncheck the "R1C1 link style" checkbox. Click OK and the way the column headings are addressed will change.
