To ensure the security of information on the local network, you can set a password for access to network folders. However, sometimes the password is lost - for example, because the computer has changed its owner. In this case, you can open the password-protected folder using Windows tools.
Instructions
Step 1
Log in as an administrator to change the owner of the folder. In the "Control Panel" double-click the "Folder Options" icon and go to the "View" tab. Uncheck the box next to Use Simple File Sharing

Right-click on the folder you want to open and select Sharing and Security from the drop-down menu. Go to the "Security" tab and click "Advanced". Go to the "Owner" tab. In the "Owner" section, mark your account. Check the box "Change owner …" and click OK to confirm.
Step 3
If there is no Security tab, you need to change the security policy settings. Choose the Run command from the Start menu or press the Win + R combination. In the "Open" search box, enter the command gpedit.msc. Expand the User Configuration, Administrative Templates, and Windows Components snap-in.

In the Explorer folder, find the Remove Security Tab policy. If it is disabled, right-click on it and set the radio button to Undefined. Confirm your selection by clicking OK

If your computer is running Windows XP Home Edition, you will need to change ownership in Safe Mode. Reboot your computer. After a single beep, press F8 on the keyboard and in the boot modes menu, use the up arrow key to select Safe Mode. Answer “yes” to the question of the system about continuing to work in this mode.
Step 6
Click on the folder with the right mouse button and select the "Properties" command. Go to the "Security" tab and click "Advanced". In the "Owner" tab, hover over your account, check the box next to "Change owner …" and click OK. Boot into normal mode.
