You can create various types of charts in Microsoft Office Excel. A histogram is a chart in which data is presented as vertical bars of various heights, the values for which are taken from the specified cells.
Instructions
Step 1
Start Excel and enter the data from which to create a bar chart. Select the desired range of cells, including the row and column names that will later be used in the chart legend.
Step 2
Click on the "Insert" tab. On the standard toolbar, in the "Charts" section, click the "Histogram" thumbnail button. In the drop-down menu, choose from the options provided the template that best suits your needs. The histogram can be conical, pyramidal, cylindrical, or look like a regular rectangular bar.
Step 3
Select the created histogram by clicking on it with the left mouse button. The context menu "Working with charts" with three tabs will become available: "Design", "Layout" and "Format". To customize the appearance of the chart at your discretion - change the type, arrange the data in a different order, choose the appropriate design style - use the "Design" tab.
Step 4
On the "Layout" tab, edit the contents of the histogram: assign a name to the chart and coordinate axes, set the way the grid is displayed, and so on. Some operations can be performed in the diagram window itself. Click, for example, on the "Chart name" field with the left mouse button, the indicated area will be highlighted. Delete the existing text and enter your own. To exit the editing mode of the selected field, left-click anywhere outside the selection boundaries.
Step 5
Use the Format tab to adjust the size of the histogram, color, outline, and effects for shapes using the appropriate sections on the toolbar. Some operations with the diagram can also be performed using the mouse. So, to change the size of the histogram area, you can either use the "Size" section, or move the cursor to the corner of the chart and, while holding down the left mouse button, drag the outline in the required direction.
Step 6
Also, to customize the histogram, you can use the context menu invoked by right-clicking on the area of the histogram. If the entire chart is selected, general settings will be available. To edit a specific data group, first select it, then options for the selected fragment will appear in the drop-down menu.
