External hard drives are very convenient storage media. They are usually quite compact, their capacity can reach over 500 gigabytes. The process of writing information to such disks is quite fast. They are also very convenient to save personal information, since they are mainly used by one person. However, it is possible that such an external drive, along with all the information, will fall into the wrong hands. That is why it is better to set a password on it.
Necessary
computer, external hard drive, Folder Guard program
Instructions
Step 1
In order to put a password on an external drive, you need to use an additional program. Folder Guard utility is very convenient and easy to use. Download this program from the Internet and install it on your computer.
Step 2
After installing the program, connect the external drive to your computer. Start the Folder Guard program. After starting, you will see the program window, which will display all the hard drives of the computer and their local partitions separately. Among them will be your removable hard drive.
Step 3
Find it and double-click on its icon with the left mouse button. After that, another small program window will appear. In this window, you can put a password on the hard drive. To do this, select the "Lock with a password" option by clicking on it with the left mouse button. A dialog box appears with two lines. On the top line, enter the password itself, and on the bottom, repeat it. For best security, your password should be at least six characters long. After entering the password, click OK. In the next window, click OK again.
Step 4
When the operation is complete, close the program. Upon closing, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to save the settings. Confirm it by clicking "Save Settings".
Step 5
Now go to "My Computer" and try to open your external hard drive. When you click "Open", a dialog box will appear asking you to enter your password. Enter the password and the hard drive will open. After you close the hard drive, a dialog box appears again, but this time asking if you want to leave the hard drive "password-protected"? If you select "Yes", then the next time this hard disk is opened, you will be required to enter a password. If you click "No", the next time you open it, you will not need to enter a password, and if you want to lock the hard disk with a password again, you will need to go through this procedure again.
