Each file on the computer has a specific program. This is done so that videos, music, pictures and other documents can be opened by double-clicking the mouse or simply pressing the Enter key. But it so happens that several applications correspond to one file type. How do I set which one to open the file by default? Or what to do when the new program has associated all the files on itself, how to restore the old association?

Instructions

Step 1

The file association usually goes wrong when installing a new program on your computer, such as an audio player. By default, the installed application automatically associates files to itself. In order to prevent this from happening, during the installation process, you can remove associations. It works with audio and video players, image viewers and other multimedia applications. If this choice is not provided during the installation process, you can reassign the files after installing the application.

Step 2

The easiest way is to re-link the file to the program you want. To do this, open the folder with the file, right-click on it and select Properties from the pop-up menu. In the window that opens, you can see which program the file is currently linked to. Press the "Change" button and in the window that opens, select the application you need. Click "Ok". In the previous window, click "Apply", then "OK". After these steps, the file will be opened by default through the program that you specified. The disadvantage of this method is that the bind operation will have to be done with each file type separately.

Step 3

The second method covers all the types of files you need at once. Almost all applications have an association setting for file types. You need to open the program through which you want to open photos, play music or edit texts. In this program, you need to go to the settings. If the application is in English, then they will be called Settings or Preferences. Among others, you need to find a tab with the name "Associations" or "File types", Association, File type association - in English versions. Check all the file types you need, click "OK" and apply the changes. After these steps, all the specified file types will be opened through the application you need.
