If you save the complete DVD image to your computer, you can watch the movie without the disc. A disc image is an ISO, DMG file or VIDEO_TS folder. These files can be up to 9 GB in size, so even just one copy of the disk eats up a huge amount of space on your computer. If you use special DVD copying software, the image file size can be significantly reduced.

Instructions

Step 1

Download and install one of the programs - DVDShrink or DVDFab. DVDShrink is freeware. This is a popular DVD ripping software, but it hasn't been updated for a long time. On the other hand, DVDFab, unlike DVDShrink, can handle many video formats.

Step 2

In the menu of the installed program, click the button to open the desired DVD image. The software will start to quickly scan the DVD. If using DVDFab, select a location to save the file and click the Customize button.

Step 3

Browse the list of DVD video episodes and delete the ones you don't want to keep. You can use the lower left window of the program to view each episode. So you can delete trailers of other films, backstage footage, bloopers, and more. The more video sequences you disable, the smaller the final file will be.

Step 4

If you click on one of the episodes in the list, audio tracks and subtitles will be shown. Remove them if they are not needed. If you don't speak Spanish, then you probably won't need Spanish subtitles. If you hate dubbing, you can delete the dubbing of the audio track, if any. Some older DVDs also contain stereo and surround tracks - remove those stereo tracks as well.

Step 5

The most effective way to reduce the size of a disk image is to increase compression. Higher compression degrades the picture, but reduces the file size. You can leave the video uncompressed by setting it as DVD9 format in DVDFab. Click the Next button.

Step 6

Some DVDs have large video files under the menu, so deleting them saves a lot of space on your computer. Check the Remove menus option to get rid of these files. You can still watch various episodes on DVD using the menu or button on the remote control. Optionally, you can check the Remove annoying PGCs option. This will get rid of copyright and other warnings when you start watching a DVD. When done, click the Start button and the program will start shrinking the DVD size.
