Step 1

Find the IDE cable connector on your CD / DVD drive - it looks like a rectangle with two rows of short pins, 40 in total. Strictly speaking, IDE - the name is not quite accurate and just in case, remember the rest of the names of this interface: PATA, EIDE, Parallel ATA. This will help you select and purchase the desired train from the store.

Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord. Before removing the cover of the system unit, touch the radiator to discharge static electricity, which can damage the electronic components of the computer. Remove the side cover of the system unit.

Step 3

First, find the IDE connector on the motherboard to which you want to connect the ribbon cable. On different models, the IDE connection block may be in a different place, sometimes this connector is brought out to the side.

Step 4

Take your IDE ribbon cable. You will see three connectors on it, with one farther away from the other two. It is this that needs to be plugged into the connection point on the motherboard. If there are not one, but two connectors on the board, you can use any of your choice.

Step 5

Connect the IDE cable connector to the motherboard. Note that the block that surrounds the pins has a small notch. And there is exactly the same protrusion on the plastic part of the cable. Turn the ribbon over to the correct side and insert. You don't need to make a lot of effort - if you overdo it, you can break the motherboard.

Step 6

Now connect the device with the IDE connection. Unlike newer drives and hard drives, which are connected with a thin SATA cable and cannot be connected incorrectly, IDE connectors require care. Near the place for the cable there is a group of contacts in the form of six pins. They are usually labeled CS / MA / SL. If you look closely, the two contacts can be closed by a plastic jumper called a jumper.

Step 7

If your ribbon cable will connect only one device, remove the jumper and connect the cable with any of the free connectors to your floppy drive or hard disk. If you have multiple drives and the one you want doesn't work, try a different connector.
