A wireless optical mouse is a great tool for modding. In it, you can change the backlight color, as well as add additional LEDs of the desired colors on the sides.

Instructions

Step 1

Remove the batteries from the mouse. Remove the screws on the underside. Put them in a jar or attach to a magnet. If the manipulator still does not open, find the stickers or legs, carefully peel or pierce them, and save too. The screws are underneath. Please note that a mouse with damaged stickers is no longer covered under warranty.

Step 2

Having opened the device, unscrew the screws that hold the board, then carefully pull the wheel out of the knob and remove the board. Do not lose the optical system (a complex shaped stamped part consisting of a lens and a prism).

Step 3

If you want the mouse to stop glowing altogether, simply replace the red LED with an infrared one, observing the polarity. You can surprise your friends with such a device: the manipulator does not light up, but it still works. LEDs of other colors will work poorly: the matrix is almost insensitive to yellow, green, blue and violet light. Therefore, if you want the mouse to glow in one of these colors, replace the main mouse LED with an infrared one, and place another one next to it, of the desired color, so that it illuminates the optical system from the side. Connect a chain of a new diode and a resistor connected in series in parallel with a similar existing chain, observing the polarity.

Step 4

If the side walls of the mouse body are opaque, the glow of the optical system is visible only when it is raised above the table. This drawback can be corrected by installing additional diodes on the sides. Connect them in the way indicated above, then drill holes in the sides of the case and fix the diodes in them with glue. They will change brightness in sync with the backlight diode of the optical system. If you want them to glow constantly, power them (also through resistors and observing polarity) from the battery compartment through a separate switch. Position the latter so that it does not interfere with the use of the mouse.

Step 5

Assemble the mouse in reverse order. Install the batteries and re-pair the pointing device with the receiver. Make sure the mouse is working. If desired, carefully paste over it with a thin leatherette on top - this will make the mouse more comfortable to hold in your hands.
