Localization is the adaptation of software, and in particular games, to the culture of a country. For example, the translation of the user interface, documents and accompanying game files is performed.
Necessary
- - programming skills;
- - printing, sound equipment.
Instructions
Step 1
Choose the depth of localization of the game. This is what exactly you want to localize. It depends on the budget, the specifics of the project and other factors. Traditionally, the following types of localization are used: paper, surface, economical, in-depth, redundant and deep. When choosing the depth of localization, keep in mind that the previous elements will be included in it.
Step 2
Perform paper localization - this option is chosen by the dealer companies after the purchase of the product and subsequent sale. In this case, make the box, user manual, and marketing materials for the game in the language selected for the localization of the game. This type of localization is preferable when the country has a high level of knowledge of the original language, for example, in Ukraine - Russian.
Step 3
Use shallow localization if you want to add your own logo, copyright and splash screen to your game. Also in this case, you can create your own readme file and replace the installation menu. For cost-effective localization, translate all game text, game dialogs, statistics, tooltips. This is done by most of the major game publishers who have their own offices in countries where they are confident in selling the game.
Step 4
Perform audio localization in the game, this is called Advanced Localization. Use this option when the language of the game is unacceptable, i.e. it is not owned in the country for which you are localizing; when the company creates its image in the market; when sound is needed to understand the meaning of the game.
Step 5
In this case, re-voice all voices (screensavers, character dialogues). Over-localization means changing graphic objects, for example, due to the legal regulations of the country. Deep localization implies the localization of the game scenario, for example, if a certain nation is represented in the game in a negative light.
