A number of applications (for example, OpenOffice.org and Arduino IDE), as well as Java applets (but not scripts) in the browser, depend on the presence of a Java virtual machine in the system. This virtual machine is free and multi-platform.
Instructions
Step 1
To install the Java virtual machine on a personal computer, first go to the website https://java.com/ru/. Then click on the big red button in the middle of the page that says "Free Java Download"
Step 2
Check if the operating system installed on your computer is on the list of supported. Mac OS X machines are a special case: they need to install the Java virtual machine using the OS itself.
Step 3
Go to the section where the Java installation files for your OS are located. Follow the link "Check now" in this section. Then click the red "Check Java version" button. You will find out if your computer has this virtual machine at all, and if so, if it needs updating.
Step 4
In case your computer really needs Java to be installed or updated, download the installation file suitable for your operating system.
Step 5
Install the installation file of the RPM format in a Linux distribution that supports this format, install it like this:
rpm -i filename.rpm
Log in as root before doing this.
Step 6
To install the self-extracting file, log in to Linux as the root user and to Winodws as the Administrator user. After that, just launch it and follow the instructions of the installer.

After all the necessary software has been installed, check that it works. Launch some applications or applets and make sure they work. Using the link "Check Java version" already mentioned above, make sure that now the version of this virtual machine on your computer is the latest.
