Disappearing desktop icons can be caused by a system crash or malware. Also, sometimes the user has a need to restore previously deleted icons. This can be easily done using the "Task Manager", which is called whenever the computer crashes.
It is necessary
- - a computer;
- - mouse and keyboard.
Instructions
Step 1
Before you take drastic action to restore icons, try a few simple steps. Right-click on an empty space on the desktop and wait for the context menu to appear.
Step 2
If you yourself accidentally deleted the icon, then to restore it, select "Undo Delete" in the menu that appears. Another option is to go to the "Trash" and restore the necessary icons. To do this, select what you need, call the context menu by pressing the right mouse button and select the "Restore" item.
Step 3
If you have lost all the icons, shortcuts and desktop files, only the background image remains, perhaps this is caused by a crash in the Explorer.exe process, which is responsible for displaying them. Call the "Task Manager" by simultaneously pressing the Ctrl, alt="Image" and Delete keys. On the Applications tab, click the New Task button and type Explorer.exe. Click "Ok".
Step 4
If the problem appeared after you downloaded and installed a program, make a backup of the system (return to the state one or several days earlier). To do this, call the "Task Manager" and run the new msconfig task. Next, run System Restore and specify a restore point - before installing this suspicious program. Click "OK" and restart your computer. This method can also help if there is nothing left on the desktop except the background image.
Step 5
Usually, when icons or the Start button disappear from the desktop, deleting some files helps. Call Task Manager and run the new regedit task. Go to Hkey_Local_Machine / Software / Microsoft / WindowsNT / CurrentVersion / Image File Execution Options and delete explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe files. Reboot your computer. This should help you restore the icons.
