Most users, using the word port, usually mean a socket used to connect various peripheral devices: a printer, scanner, modem, etc. However, in an Internet environment, the word port has a completely different meaning. The port system exists so that data packets arriving on a computer can recognize which program they need to access: Internet browsers, an email client, or so on. That is, each program running on the computer works with requests using specific ports.
Instructions
Step 1
Server ports have their own numbers, which are specified in the settings. Many computer game players often need to find out the port of the game server. This is done quite simply. Without leaving the game, minimize it, and click the "Start" button on the computer. Next, we look for the "Run" command and select it. In the input line write "cmd" and press the enter button. In the black window (console) that appears, manually enter "netstat" and press enter again. The computer will display all currently active "Connections" and "Ports". They are represented as a numeric combination of the IP address followed by a colon and the active port.
Step 2
If you want to know the port of the proxy server that your computer uses to connect to the Internet, do the following. The easiest way: open the properties of your network connection and find the line "Default gateway". It is the address that is written in this line that will be the proxy server used by your computer. If there is nothing in this line, refer to the settings in the Internet browser. To do this, go to the "service" tab, find the properties of the browser or connection, and then go to the "Network" or "LAN settings" menu (depending on the browser). This menu item should display the port of the proxy server. If it is not there, then, most likely, the browser works with web pages directly without a proxy server.
Step 3
Another option is to use the tracert command. In most cases, but not always, it also displays the port number. For example, you want to know the port of the mail.ru server. To do this, write the following in the command line (console): tracert mail.ru. The first number is the server port for this web address. Next, you will see the address of the internal proxy server, your IP address, and more.
