Archives are most often used when transferring files to someone or moving them to another computer. Sometimes archive files arrive at the recipient damaged, and re-sending is sometimes very troublesome or even impossible. Modern archiving programs have built-in tools with which you can try to extract content from a damaged file.

Instructions

Step 1

Try to repair the damaged archive. To do this, double-click the file in the archiver program and in the "Operations" section of the application menu, select "Restore archive (s)". You can also use the key combination alt="Image" + R.

Step 2

WinRAR will show a dialog box in which you can select a folder to place the restored archive or leave the default value - it assumes using the same directory in which the original file is located. Here you can also check the box "Treat damaged archive as ZIP" if the file is not a RAR archive. Press the OK button to start the rescue operation.

Step 3

You will see the progress of the procedure in the information window, and at the end of the work, the “Close” button will become active in it. The restored file will have the same name as the original, but the prefix fixed will be appended to it.

Step 4

If the archive cannot be restored, in some cases it is possible to save objects from the undamaged part of the file vault - this can be done, for example, in the event of the "Unexpected end of archive" error. WinRAR is programmed so that if it is impossible to extract the contents of the archive completely, it deletes all files extracted by the time the error occurred. You need to deselect this option in the operation settings for the damaged file.

Step 5

Right-click the archive file, select the Extract Files command from the context menu, and the program will display a dialog box with the operation settings. In the "Miscellaneous" section on the "General" tab, find the text "Leave corrupted files on disk" and check the checkbox next to it. The files will be extracted to the folder whose address is specified in the "Extract Path" field - it is located at the very top line of this tab. Change the value of this parameter if necessary, and then click OK.
