Underlining is one of the elements of text formatting that allows you to improve your understanding of the meaning of what is written by highlighting its most important parts. In the word processor Microsoft Office Word, you can select words using this method in different ways, while getting different options for underline.

Instructions

Step 1

Start Word, open the desired document in it and select the word you want to underline. Click on the button with the underlined letter "H" in the word processor menu - on the "Home" tab, it is placed in the "Font" command group. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + U, the result will be the same - Word will underline the highlighted word.

Step 2

If the word to be underlined has not yet been typed, you can perform the described manipulation - click on the button or press the key combination - in advance, before entering the word. In this case, you need to remember to do the same thing again after the end of typing the selected text - to turn off the underline mode.

Step 3

In addition to the standard single-line underline, Word has other options. To select one of them - dotted line, dash-dotted, double, etc. - instead of clicking on the button with the letter "H" itself, click on the label at its right edge. This label opens a drop-down list with a list of possible line design options. The last line in this list - "Underline color" - opens a subsection where you can specify the color of the selected line.

Step 4

If you select a piece of text and use one of the options described above, the entire piece will be underlined, including spaces. In a word processor, it is possible to set an underline option, in which the line will be placed only under the words, and the spaces will remain in their standard form. To use this option, after selecting the desired fragment, right-click on it and select the "Font" line in the context menu. In the "Underline" field of the window that opens, set the value "Only words". After that, you will be able to change the value in the "Underline color" field - if necessary, select the desired color in it. Click OK and Word will underline the words.
