One of the most popular archive file formats in the world is RAR. Due to the fact that the creator of the RAR format and programs-archivers and unpackers working with these types of archives is the Russian developer Evgeny Roshal, as well as the fact that RAR provides a very high data compression ratio (often greater than ZIP), the format is especially popular in Russia and the countries of the former USSR. But despite this, many novice users are wondering how to extract a file from a RAR archive.

Instructions

Step 1

Change the current directory in the WinRAR program to the one in which the file to be unpacked is located. After starting the application, the user's subdirectory in the Documents and Settings folder can be selected as the working directory (if the program is launched for the first time), or the directory that was last used during the previous launch. Change the directory to the desired one. To do this, left-click on the drop-down list located at the top of the main application window and select a storage device. The list below will display the contents of the root directory of the selected device. Click on the folders to navigate to the target directory.

Step 2

In the listing of the current directory, select the file to be unpacked. Browse the list with the contents of the current directory. Find the item corresponding to the file you want. For the convenience of searching, you can sort the list in ascending and descending order by name, size, type and date of the last modification of files by clicking on the corresponding sections of the header. Select the file by clicking the left mouse button on the corresponding item in the list.

Step 3

Begin the process of extracting files from the archive. Press Alt + E or select Commands and Extract to Specified Folder from the menu.

Step 4

Set the options for extracting files from the archive. In the "Extraction path and parameters" dialog, switch to the "General" tab. In the directory tree on the right, select the directory where the files will be extracted, or a subdirectory will be placed into which the extraction will take place. Move the focus to the Retrieve Path text box. Add additional path components as needed. Using the controls located in the "Update Mode", "Overwrite Mode" and "Miscellaneous" groups, set the desired unpacking parameters. Click OK.

Step 5

Enter the password for the archive, if necessary. If a password was specified when creating the archive, its input will be requested after clicking the OK button in the previous dialog. The Enter Password window appears. Enter password. Click OK.

Step 6

Wait for the file extraction process to finish. Statistical information on the progress of the unpacking process will be displayed in the "Extract from" dialog.
