Instructions

Step 1

Open the avi file you want to split in VirtualDub. To do this, select the items "File" -> "Open video file …" in the main menu of the application. Alternatively, press Ctrl + O. In the file selection dialog, navigate to the required directory, select the file in the list and click the "Open" button.

Step 2

Activate the copying mode of the video stream without changes. Select the "Video" section in the main menu. Check the box "Direct stream copy".

Step 3

Activate the copying mode of the audio stream without changes. In the application menu, select the "Audio" item and check the "Direct stream copy" item. The modes of direct copying of video and audio streams prevent the processing of the avi file data, which allows you to split it into parts as quickly as possible and without any deterioration in quality.

Step 4

Set the starting point for the first of the parts into which the file is split. Move the slider at the bottom of the window to the frame where you want the video segment to start. If the first part should start from the first frame, do not move the slider. Press the Home key or select "Set selection start" from the "Edit" menu.

Step 5

Set the ending point for the current portion of the video. Move the slider to the frame you want the part to end with. Click the "End" button, or click on the "Set selection end" item in the "Edit" menu.

Step 6

Save part of the video as a separate avi file. In the main menu of the application, activate the "File" item, and then select "Save as AVI …". Alternatively, you can press the F7 key. A file save dialog will appear. Specify the path and file name to save in it. Click the "Save" button.

Step 7

Wait until the end of saving the video fragment to a file. The VirtualDub Status dialog will display information about the process of writing the file to disk.

Step 8

Set the starting point for the next section of the split file. If necessary, move the slider at the bottom of the window to the desired position. If the next section should start immediately after the previous one, do not move the slider. Press the Home key, or use the menu items "Edit" -> "Set selection start". Go to step 5.
