A situation may arise when making changes to the browser settings leads to undesirable consequences of its functioning. Sometimes these changes cannot be returned to their previous state due to the fact that the user has forgotten what changes he made or it is difficult to determine which of them had an impact. And it’s not so much a matter of forgetfulness, but of a multitude of changes made at the same time. There may be a need for a simple solution to "reset" the settings for the Opera browser to its original state, which is what this step-by-step instruction suggests.
Necessary
- Operating system of the Windows family.
- Installed Opera browser.
Instructions
Step 1
Launch your Opera browser by clicking on the launch shortcut on the Desktop, or in the list of programs by clicking the "Start" button. When the browser loads, open a new tab. To do this, left-click on the "+" button on the right side of the tab bar, or press Ctrl-T on the keyboard.
Step 2
As a result of the previous step, you will find yourself in the address bar of the browser. Enter or copy the following line:
opera: config # User Prefs | Opera Directory
Hit Enter. The browser options page is displayed, and in particular, the Opera Directory parameter with the appropriate text entry field. This field contains the full path to the browser profile folder. The contents of this field must be copied to the clipboard. To do this, left-click anywhere in this input field and press Ctrl-A (select all), then Ctrl-C (copy to clipboard).
This will copy the full path to the browser settings file. For example, for the Opera Portable version, this line is:
C: / Program Files / OperaPortable / Data / Opera / profile \
For other versions of the browser, it may differ in both the path name and the file name.
Step 3
Then click on the "Start" button or press the corresponding key on the keyboard. Select the menu item "Run". You can do it easier by pressing the keyboard shortcut Win-R. The "Run Program" window will open.
Make sure the input language is English and enter the following command:
CMD / R DEL"
Next, you need to paste the path from the clipboard via Ctrl-V and enter the name of the operaprefs.ini file from the keyboard (if you have an old version of Opera, then opera6.ini will be instead of operaprefs.ini). Add some more quotes and the command line in this example will look like this:
CMD / R DEL "C: / Program Files / OperaPortable / Data / Opera / profile / operaprefs.ini"
Step 4
Now switch back to the Opera browser window. Shut it down. This can be done by pressing the Alt-F4 key combination or by clicking on the icon for closing the window with the left mouse button. Indicate possible confirmations of the program termination.
When Opera exits, it will have no effect on the options file for its current settings. To be sure that Opera has been unloaded from RAM, wait for about half a minute, and then proceed to the next step of this instruction.
Step 5
Go back to the previous window where you entered the command. Press Enter or OK. The command to delete the Opera preference options file will be executed.
Step 6
Launch Opera browser again. Not finding the settings file, it will create it again, and all options will be returned to their original state.
