The skin determines how your user interface looks on Windows. Standard desktop themes, windows, buttons, and other elements can get boring. In this case, the built-in ability to change the desktop theme comes to the rescue. All Windows starting from Windows XP have it. Since even now this version of Windows is very popular due to its simplicity, ease of use, and low resource consumption.

Necessary

  • - a computer with Windows XP;
  • - themes;
  • - theme file uxtheme.dll.

Instructions

Step 1

You can change the theme to the one built into Windows, or you can change it to any other. To change to the standard theme, left-click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Display" and go to the "Appearance" tab. Here you can change the theme by selecting the desired theme in the "Windows and Buttons" section and clicking "Apply". The developers of Windows XP have only two themes built into their operating system: "Windows XP Style" and "Classic".

Step 2

Further operations are not recommended if you are not confident in your abilities or are not a sufficiently experienced user. Otherwise, Windows may malfunction. In any case, before experimenting with the operating system, it is recommended that you make a backup copy of the System32 folder located in the Windows folder.

Step 3

To install additional themes, you must first patch the theme file uxtheme.dll. This file is widely available on the Internet, just make sure that it is suitable for your version of Windows. The downloaded file must replace the standard one located at C: WindowsSystem32. Now find and download additional themes online. Run the file with the theme you like. Click Next. The default installation path is C: WindowsResourcesThemes. If you have Windows installed on a different drive, change the drive letter to the one you have. Then follow the instructions of the installation wizard.

Step 4

If the theme has not changed, automatically go back to "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Display" and go to the "Appearance" tab. There are now additional themes to choose from.

Step 5

If you need to remove unnecessary or unnecessary themes from this list, click on "My Computer" and select the drive where Windows is installed and go to the C: WindowsResourcesThemes folder. To remove a theme, delete the file with the theme extension and the folder (if any) with the same name as the deleted file.
