It is used not only by the artist, but also by the program itself, automatically blocking the layers of some of the images opened in it. The layer could have been locked not by a graphics editor, but by a previous user of this psd file. This is done by clicking on the "Save All" icon in the layers panel - it is placed above the topmost layer, in the last place in the row of icons at the inscription "Lock". Disabling the lock is done in the same way - select the layer protected from changes and click on this icon. Unlike the previous step, after this action no dialogs will appear, Photoshop will, without additional questions, remove the editing prohibition and remove its symbol - the lock icon - from the right side of the layer line.
Step 3
Sometimes it makes more sense to duplicate a locked layer rather than change its status. In this case, you will keep the original layer intact and, if editing fails, you can create another duplicate of the original to try a different editing option. Making a copy of a locked layer is very simple - select it and press Ctrl + J. After that turn off the visibility of the original layer.
