Folders in the Windows operating system are essentially files too, with some additional attributes added to their properties. The names of these objects in the file system are subject to the restrictions imposed on the use of certain symbols and reserved words.

Step 1
Do not include the unequal signs (), colon (:), vertical bar (|), double quotes ( ), asterisk (*), forward and backslashes (/ and), and question mark (?) In folder names. If if you try to do this, the system will politely explain that you should not do this, and the new name will not be applied.

A period at the beginning of a folder name can also cause an error message, but not in all cases. If you really need it, place a space, dash or one more period after the period, do not use only numbers and letters in this position.

Avoid the names of directories reserved for different devices - con, prn, aux, nul, com1, com2, com3, com4, com5, com6, com7, com8, com9, lpt1, lpt2, lpt3, lpt4, lpt5, lpt6, lpt7, lpt8, lpt9. The same applies to the designation of the zero value - nul. This limitation is a rudimentary remnant of the DOS disk operating system, which the Windows manufacturers have not yet bothered to fix.

Do not start folder names with spaces or leave them at the end of the name. Leading and trailing spaces will not cause an error message, but only because Windows will automatically remove them - this feature should be borne in mind.

Limit the number of characters in the folder name. The Windows documentation explicitly prohibits folder names with more than 260 characters, but there is also an indirect limitation. In operations of copying, renaming, moving, various system and application programs use the full path to a folder or file. It includes a listing of all the directories that need to be traversed from the root directory to get to the file you want. The same restriction is imposed on the full path - it must not contain more than 260 characters, otherwise, instead of performing the operation, the system will display an error message. Therefore, it is highly desirable to use folder names much shorter than this value.
