Instructions

Step 1

One of the ways to protect files from reading is to encrypt the folders that contain them. In the Windows XP environment, the EFS encryption system is used for this purpose. First of all, you need to make sure that the volume on which the files for encryption are stored has the NTFS file system, if necessary, it can be converted by appropriate programs.

Step 2

Open the main menu "Start", in the section "All Programs" select "Accessories", then "File Explorer". In the window that opens, navigate to the folder you want to encrypt and open its properties.

Step 3

In the Properties window, open the General tab, click the Other button. Check the "Encrypt content to protect data" checkbox and click OK.

Step 4

Click OK again. Select the piece of information to encrypt:

"Only to this folder" - only the folder itself will be encrypted, "To this folder and to all subfolders and files" - all contents of the current folder will be encrypted, including all subfolders with their contents.

Click OK.

Step 5

This method is suitable if you use your own account, the restrictions will apply to all others. When other users try to open, copy or move files, a corresponding warning will be displayed. In addition, encrypting a folder does not prevent you from viewing its contents, only access to the files in it is prohibited.
