The Windows XP operating system has an excellent function that allows you to create a system backup. This process will allow you to quickly recover the OS after a failure in the future.

Step 1
To back up Windows XP, you need free hard disk space and a 3.5-inch floppy disk. Open the Start menu and navigate to Programs. Select the "Utilities" menu and open the "System Services" item. Now go to the "Recovery" menu.

In the window that appears, select "Advanced options". Select ASR Wizard and click Next. Specify the storage location for the future system archive. After a while, insert the floppy disk into the drive and click the "Continue" button.
Step 3
To restore the system using the previously created backup, boot the computer from the Windows XP installation disc. When prompted to press F2 to start System Restore, do this. Now insert the floppy disk and restore the OS using the prompts.

If you are unable to use floppy disks, or you need to create a more complete backup, then download and install the Paragon Partition Manager program.
Step 5
Run the installed application. Select Advanced Mode. Find the "Wizards" menu on the toolbar and open it. Select "Copy Section". In the next window, click the "Next" button.
Step 6
To successfully complete this operation, you need an unallocated area on the system or other hard disk. Select a location to save a copy of the partition. Click "Next".
Step 7
Set the size of the future created section. It should not be less than the size of the system disk. Click "Next". To confirm all changes, click the "Finish" button.
Step 8
Now find the "Apply Pending Changes" button under the main toolbar. Click this button. Wait for the process of copying the system partition to complete.
