The computer administrator has the ability to block access to the device for other users. This is a necessary security measure to protect personal data as well as restrict access to certain apps for children.
Instructions
Step 1
Go to your computer's BIOS by pressing F2 after power on. Use the arrow keys to select System Security and press Enter.
Step 2
Select System Password from the main BIOS menu using the arrow keys. Enter your password and confirmation. Select Setup Password from the menu screen and re-enter the desired password. This step may appear to be repetitive, but it is necessary to complete the process.
Step 3
Click on Password Status. Change the password status from Unlocked to Locked. Press Esc twice, select Save and Exit. Press the Enter key to save your settings and restart your computer.
Step 4
Limit access to the computer in the Windows operating system. Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel". Go to User Accounts if you have Windows XP. For Windows Vista or 7, select User Accounts and Family Safety.
Step 5
Select your account from the list, then click the "Create Password" button on Windows XP users. Users using newer versions of the system should specify "Change Windows password" and then "Create a password for your account." Enter the password in the two fields provided, making sure the data matches. Enter a hint for your password in case you forget it. When ready, click Create Password.
Step 6
Try limiting access to your computer using Windows built-in security. Open the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel". Go to Security Center.
Step 7
Check the status of the Windows firewall. On XP computers, this is specified in the Security Essentials section. If the program is OFF, change this parameter to ON, then click OK. On Windows Vista and 7, select Windows Firewall, then Turn Windows Firewall on or off from the left column of the window. Activate computer protection.
