Using a gamepad (or, in common people, a "joystick") is not only very convenient for controlling games, but also allows gamers to play together on one computer. This can only be hindered by intermittent compatibility issues.

Step 1
Check your controller model and compatibility. Conventionally, all PC joysticks can be divided into two types: Xbox360-compatible and non-compatible. Pay attention to the location of the sticks - if the left is higher than the right, then this is a model from Microsoft. Today, only such joysticks can provide a comfortable game: all due to the transition to a new standard of feedback, which the old gamepads do not support. There will be especially many problems with games marked "Games for Windows" - these are products that have been finally transferred to the new format, and they may not work with the old controls at all.
Step 2
Use an emulator. To troubleshoot problems with, for example, the Logitech Rumblepad 2, use the device emulator. This will make the game think you are using a 360 controller while playing with another. There are no specific programs yet, but there is a simple file replacement mechanism that can be easily found on the Internet. You will be offered several files for download, software for debugging a gamepad and instructions on how it all works.
Step 3
Use the standard configurator from the installation disc. Almost every gamepad has a disk with drivers: as a rule, everything works fine without it, but you lose, firstly, stable feedback, and secondly, the configurator program. When launching such software, you can assign any value to the joystick keys: for example, moving the mouse cursor. That is, you can set the values of the keyboard buttons on the gamepad and play even those products that joysticks do not support in principle.
Step 4
Set up your gamepad using the software included with the game. Sometimes, especially if the product is ported to a PC from consoles, there may not be any means for setting up controls inside the game itself. In this case, you should look for the configurator program in the root directory, and set the key combinations before starting the game. There are also "launchers" that combine control settings, add-ons, and video options. In this case, carefully study all the items of the proposed menu to find the one you need.
