Particularly curious users who have little space provided by the standard OS settings always want to fix something in the very heart of the operating system - in its registry. As a result, from time to time this registry starts working with errors that affect the operation of the entire system. And the moment comes when you need to restore the registry.

You only need to make changes to the registry in extreme cases

Necessary

  • A computer with an installed OS,
  • boot disk,
  • file manager for DOS

Instructions

Step 1

There are several ways to restore the registry. The first and universal one is that you need to back up the registry files either to removable media or to a hard disk partition where the operating system is not installed. This concerns the SYSTEM. DAT file, which is located in the system folder at% SystemRoot% / System32 / Config.

To be sure, it is best to copy the entire folder with system files before you start making changes. Thus, in the event of a failure, it will be enough just to copy this folder back to restore the registry.

If the operating system cannot be loaded, use the boot disk, run the simplest file manager and copy the folder into place.

Step 2

If you do not want to copy the entire amount of data, then you can get by with exporting the necessary part of the registry to a reg file. To do this, in the "Start" menu in the "Run" line, write the regedit command. The standard program for editing the registry is launched.

In the window that opens, select the required registry branch and right-click on it. In the drop-down menu, select the "Export" item and indicate the location where we want to store the file.

After that, it will be enough just to run this file and agree to the proposed changes in the registry to return everything to its original form.

Step 3

In addition to the standard tools provided by the operating system, there are many more programs designed to edit the registry. All of these programs provide the ability to back up the registry or part of it. Better to use such programs.
