The Windows operating system configuration database is called the "system registry" and has a tree-like architecture. It has "bushes" and "branches" that end … no, not with leaves, but with variables and their values. As a result of a system failure or careless user intervention, these registry elements may be damaged, and then the user will have to attend to the restoration of the favorite tree of his operating system.

Instructions

Step 1

The most reliable and at the same time the easiest way to restore the registry is to roll back the system. To use it, open the OS main menu, type "ress" and press the Enter key. As a result, the System Restore Wizard will be launched, in the first window of which you just need to click the "Next" button. In the next window, select one of the "restore points". Each of them refers to a specific date - choose the one that most likely contains the registry with the still intact problematic branch. Click Next again and the rollback process will start. When it is over, the computer will restart and the registry will be restored.

Step 2

If the described method for some reason cannot be used, try downloading the required branch through the Windows Registry Editor. To do this, you need to have an intact copy of the problematic registry branch exported to a separate file. Exporting is one of the functions of the editor. Find a registry somewhere with an intact branch - in another copy of the OS of this computer, in friends' computers, at work, with Internet communication partners, etc. You can try to create a.reg file yourself by looking for an object in the system folder that belongs to the desired hive. The correspondence between files and hives can be found, for example, on the page provided in the list of sources.

Step 3

To export the desired hive from the operating system with an intact registry, run Registry Editor. In Windows 7 and Vista, open the main OS menu, type regedit and press Enter. In older versions of this OS, first select Run from the main menu, then type regedit and press Enter.

Step 4

Select the desired branch in the left column, open the "File" section in the menu and select the "Export" line. In the dialog that opens, specify the name of the file and the save location - if you are going to transfer it to your computer, you can immediately save it, for example, to a flash drive or even to a mobile phone. Click the Save button.

Step 5

Copy the file with the exported registry branch to your computer, start the "Registry Editor" again and select the registry hive in the left column to which the branch should be added. Expand the "File" section in the program menu and select the "Import" line. In the dialog that opens, find the saved.reg file and click the "Open" button. The registry branch will be restored.
