All manipulations with layers in the graphics editor Adobe Photoshop are carried out using a separate panel. It contains most of the tools for adding and removing new elements of this kind from the list, changing the order of their alternation, grouping, etc. But since most Photoshop operations can be implemented in several ways, for example, you can insert a layer through the main menu, and using hot keys, and using drag and drop.

Instructions

Step 1

In the layers panel, select the one above which you want to insert a new layer by clicking the mouse. If this panel is not on the screen, then activate it by pressing the F7 key. Then open the "Layers" section in the editor menu, go to the "New" subsection and select the "Layer" item. The keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + N is assigned to this command, you can use it as well. In any case, the dialog for creating a new layer will open.

Step 2

Enter text in the "Name" field that explains the future purpose or content of the added layer. This is optional, but highly advisable if you plan to keep your job. Even if there are less than a dozen layers in total, next time you will need time to figure out what each of them is for, and a short explanatory inscription will greatly simplify this process.

Step 3

In the "Color" field, you can select a color shade for a layer in the panel - it can be convenient if you need to visually mark layers of the same purpose.

Step 4

Click OK and the new layer insertion operation will be completed.

Step 5

There is an abbreviated version of this operation, in which a new layer is created without using a dialog box. To use it, just click the second icon from the right at the bottom edge of the layers panel - when you hover over it, the tooltip "Create a new layer" pops up.

Step 6

If you need to insert not an empty layer, but a copy of one of the existing ones, find it in the list and right-click. In the context menu, select the Duplicate Layer command. This operation also has a combination of hot keys: Ctrl + J. The copy will appear above the original line, but you can move it to any other level by dragging with the left mouse button.

Step 7

You can add a copy of an existing layer to another image opened in the graphics editor. To do this, place the windows of both pictures side by side, then select the layer above which you want to paste the copy. Go to the image window containing the copied layer and drag it from the layers panel to the second image. The operation will be completed, and you will have to do the correct positioning of the layer in the new environment.
