Disabling the autorun feature in all versions of Windows is mostly due to security concerns, since many virus applications use the autorun.inf file to automatically launch themselves. The procedure does not require special knowledge or the involvement of additional programs.
Instructions
Step 1
Use the Microsoft-recommended safest method to disable Autoplay for removable media using the Group Policy Editor tool. To do this, call the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button, and enter the value of gpedit.msc in the text field of the search bar. Confirm the scan by pressing the Enter function key and authorize the selected action by pressing the "Allow" button in the system prompt window that opens (for Windows Vista / XP).
Step 2
Expand the Local Computer node and go to the Computer Configuration group. Expand the Administrative Templates link and open the Windows Components section. Select the "Autorun Policies" component and expand the "Disable Autorun" item in the "Details" section by double-clicking (for Windows Vista / XP).
Step 3
Use the "Enabled" option and check the "All disks" checkbox. Confirm saving the autorun settings and apply the changes made by restarting the computer system (for Windows Vista / XP).
Step 4
Use the "Registry Editor" utility to disable the autorun function for all removable media in Windows version 7. To do this, open the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "Run" dialog. Enter the value regedit in the "Open" line and confirm the launch of the selected tool by clicking the OK button.
Step 5
Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorer branch and open the context menu of the NoDriveTypeAutorun key by right-clicking. Specify the "Change" item and enter the value 0xFF in the "Value" line. Confirm the saving of the parameters by clicking OK and exit the editor utility. Apply your changes by restarting your computer (for Windows 7).
