After purchasing a new hard drive, it usually needs to be formatted so that the operating system can place files on it. This process is simple, but it can take some time, depending on the size of the hard disk.

Step 1
If the new hard disk is not the system one, then, upon booting, the system, in most cases, will prompt you to format the new disk.
Step 2
If formatting was not offered, but the new disk is visible in the "My Computer" menu, just right-click on it, select "format", then indicate whether to perform full formatting or quick (clear the table of contents), select the cluster size and click "To begin".
Step 3
If the disk is not visible in the system, then go to Administrative Tools (through the Control Panel), then to Computer Management, and from there to Disk Management. Right-click on the desired disk and select "format".
Step 4
If the hard disk is a system one and it is supposed to install an operating system on it, then when installing the OS Windows itself will offer to format it (with the creation of partitions).
