An active speaker is a speaker system that contains a built-in amplifier. It takes up less space than loudspeakers and amplifier housed in separate enclosures. If desired, a conventional one can be converted into an active speaker system.

Step 1

Take any type of conventional speaker system that can handle a few watts of input power. It must have a collapsible design. There must be enough room inside each speaker to accommodate an amplifier.

Step 2

Please note that the classic design of an active speaker system involves placing a stereo amplifier in the cabinet of only one of the speakers. Sometimes it also houses the power supply. The second column remains passive. This solution allows, firstly, to execute both amplifier channels on a common board, and secondly, to reduce the number of cables to only three (signal input, power supply, output to the second speaker).

Step 3

Take the amplifier and power supply ready-made, from a miniature active speaker system of lower power. It is known that the sound quality is determined by the loudspeakers to a much greater extent than by the amplifier. Therefore, having found a new "home" in the form of significantly larger speakers, the amplifier will begin to sound completely different. The main thing is that the impedance of the speakers in large speakers is not less than in those from which the amplifier is removed. Remove the amplifier together with the volume control, signal cable, etc.

Step 4

In the case of the speaker inside which the amplifier will be located, drill a hole for the power button, volume control, LED, cable entry. If you cannot fix the power button from the old speakers due to the significant thickness of the new ones, replace it with a toggle switch.

Step 5

Connect the output of one of the amplifier channels directly to the dynamic head of one speaker (or to its crossover, if it is multi-way), and the other to a long cable. Connect it to the input of another speaker.

Step 6

Inspect the installation carefully. Make sure that under no circumstances can the components move, causing a short circuit, and that when the case is closed, neither the pins nor the magnet system of the speaker will touch the amplifier components. Secure all parts and assemblies well. Place the primary circuits of the power supply unit at a distance from the secondary ones, so that they cannot touch each other under any circumstances. Drill some discreet ventilation holes near the power supply and amplifier.

Step 7

Close the enclosure of the speaker in which the amplifier is located. Connect the finished system to the audio source and to the network. Turn it on and experience it.
